[ V’seji seems pretty excited over diving into R’yoji’s dreams. Not just for curiosity’s sake, but also for his well-being. For as long as he could remember, his companion has lost sleep to the darkness, every now and then waking up to stare at nothing.
He knows what it’s like. His dreams were once haunted by the war in snow... It was the time when he missed the darkness that coveted his dreams after his guardian passed. Turning to R’yoji, he frowns, obviously disapproving as he leads them on. ]
What would you say if I gave you that same excuse?
[ Probably lecture him, right? He’s fortunate enough where the nightmares subsided, but he still does dream. That’s what he wants for his lover and best friend, too, if once in a while.
Slowing his own pace, he lags behind enough to hook their arms together to show that he’s here. ]
[ Thinking back, he can remember when the nightmares began. Since his descend into becoming a Dark Knight they have eased them for a bit, but not enough to entirely get rid of them. Finding times where they struck at him the most. Losing countless sleep again and again to the nightmares that seem unbound with energy and restless to keep him from sleeping.
It's to no surprise he can't bring himself to be excited by it. R'yoji cannot entirely avoid the look he receives from his partner as he quietly looks to the side with ears pinning back and tail laying very low. Other than the slow steps behind, he keeps almost still as only one ear flicks to the sound of that tone. He knows he wouldn't leave it be were things reversed. He would refuse to let things continue. He would think, how he has been haunted for long enough. If not the comforting quietness of rest then the occasional good dreams that once fluttered and left one feeling good. ] ...
[ However, he does not respond. He knows he does not need to. He knows that V'seji is aware he would do anything for him. Just as he's doing this for R'yoji now. His gaze watches the grass and plains beneath his steps change as they draw near the gate but draws his attention elsewhere when his arm is taken into the other's. He blinks at him, light surprise fading back to his earlier frown as brows knit together.
He knows. His head dips a little to the side, head brushing against the other but nothing more given walking makes things a bit too awkward to try and do anything else. But, it's a silent acknowledgement that he knows.
Afraid. He's afraid. To bring out whatever is lingering in his nightmares, aware enough from the pixie that weaves them that it's something powerful. What happens after they deal with it is another fear. How his body will respond to no longer having something he's come to being use to? He glances to his best friend, his lover, his moon. A thin red tufted tail seeks out and gingerly coils around the other's sleek black one. At least he will have him. ]
[ V'seji can't help but chuckle at R'yoji's reaction, very much satisfied that he yielded to his request. If the other Miqo'te were to fight back, it would only be so long until V'seji surrendered himself. He's well aware that everyone needs their time to prepare. The press does catch him off-guard, but he returns it despite how awkward it is to walk like this.
He might as well bury his nose into the side of his head, nuzzling him furiously, before he pulls back to reassure him. The pixies that past by them giggle, finding the sight so cute—love is in the air, they say. ]
It's going to be okay, Yoji.
[ And here they are, in front of the porxie. Though V'seji was the one to encourage R'yoji to face his fears, he doesn't push him to get snorted on. They've seen what children's nightmares can do, but what about a full-fledged adult? ]
[ There's a squint of his gaze at the- praise? Far too use to the other saying such words in an almost demeaning manner, but that was the start of their relationship. Now, even if there's a touch to tease, he knows he thinks it so. Which is why he can't be entirely mad with him but he does grumble at the words nonetheless.
It softens at feel of a breath and brush of that nose against his head, a quiet surprised sound escaping him but his tail vibrates in its coiled hold around his partner's own. Colors of green and blue watch V'seji, gaze lowered but keeping him in full view of his vision despite catching the giggles and even fanning looks of the pixies around.
Shut it, pests. Ears flicker where they lay pinned back, knowing if anyone has this it will be V'seji. Even so.. how will they truly know? His gaze filters over to the porxie that stares at him with big eyes. ]
..Shouldn't I be asleep for this? [ He frowns, remembering each time that the children were asleep. If that were the case it should be.. fine. But he did not want V'seji to fight whatever it is alone. So he passes a look to his partner, staring at him with a more focused stare. ] You'll wake me, right? Don't fight it alone.
[ He will refuse to do this otherwise. So long as V'seji makes this promise, then he will settle and await for their pixie friend to put the spell to cause him to fall into immediate slumber. ]
[ Before R'yoji can answer back or say anything, he lifts his orb and the cards start floating with a golden glow. His companion may not feel sleepy now, but... isn't it handy that healers can lull another to slumber? They really are the role that can save someone and leave them for dead. ]
Good night, sweet prince.
[ And he casts the sweet spell. A veil of shimmer cascades around R'yoji with the flick of his wrist. It may feel that his eyelids are getting heavy! Oh so very heavy. Even before his favorite is swept away to Lala land, he motions towards the porxie to get ready and sniff out that nightmare. Once the flying porker breathes in, V'seji switches to a stronger job. It'd be faster if he used his spear than his star globe.
Of course, he has every intention in waking R'yoji up once the nightmare manifests. As kindhearted as V'seji can be, he isn't a fool to tackle a battle on his own. How should he wake him up, he wonders? Stroking his chin, his tail sways as he doesn't even see the nightmare as that much of a threat. ]
[ Good. There's some reassurance as R'yoji gets his reply, gaze flickering to the golden orb that floats up and dances with cards in tune. Even though he's aware of what happens next he's never truly prepared for it. A few occasions against other adventures in battle have tossed him into slumber but nothing an immediate smack would stir him out a second later.
For a moment, his hand twitches, tempted to reach out to his lover and friend but all he does is give him a resounding look of hinted worry before he feels the weight of sleep dawn on him. He feels that heaviness, lashes fluttering and before he realizes it he's enveloped in darkness.
Dark. Cold. It's anything far from a pleasant dream, the nightmare beginning its turmoil as his expression knits in light distress during his sleep. There's some minor relief once the nightmare is sucked out of him but he doesn't wake even as it's taken away. V'seji is sure putting some faith in how long the Porxie can hold onto that nightmare. Yet, what does R'yoji know? Still off is slumber, awaiting his waking faith. ]
[ The porxie says the nightmare has manifested not too far from them and V'seji nods. Carefully, he slaps both of R'yoji's cheeks with a loud smack, patting them in hopes that he'll wake from such a startling noise and sudden sharp pain. Something softer and more welcome would take too long. ]
See? I promised I would wake you.
[ Not that he had planned on leaving him. Even if R'yoji is awake or still sleeping, he keeps patting his cheeks until he stops him. His black tail lashes wildly as his ears stick upright, watching his companion closely. With a louder voice, he continues: ]
We have a nightmare to slay, aye? Need you in stay vigilant.
[ Almost immediately does R'yoji jolt away, wincing at the slight burn left from the slaps to his cheeks. He blinks before pinning a drowsy glare at his moon, lips pressing in a line before growling out. ]
You really didn't hold back, did you?
[ Ears pin back, his own tail lashing just as wildly now as the anxiety catches up to him and feeling his expression darken at the memory of his nightmare. He holds back a sigh, trying to press onto his feet with a shakiness that trembles under the weight of his legs.
He's trying not to appear shaken or weak from the distant feeling but he's undoubtedly afraid. But he's trying to smoothly cover it with a false bravo. Still, he sighs and stares in the direction of a familiar feeling. A feeling that's haunted him for years. ] I know, I know..
I could have stabbed you. Would that be preferred, Yoji?
[ V'seji jokes, hoping that it can make light of a rather dark situation. Nightmares may seem too far off from reality, merely tricks in their minds, but isn't that what makes them so dangerous? They can't physically fight them. They can't see them when they're awake. They can only surrender to dreams. His hands stay on those cheeks, massaging the pain as he forces R'yoji to look at him.
This man always had trouble hiding his feelings. They're always illustrated on his rigid and worn features. V'seji smiles apologetically, feeling some remorse for pushing him to this... But it's for his own good. Carefully, he presses their foreheads together with his eyes closed and ears pinned back. ]
Remember to breathe. [ They can't nerves lock their limbs. That would be death. ] It's going to be fine.
[ Jokes or not, he actually would likely have preferred being stabbed than this ordeal. He knows he's making this bigger than what it needs to be but it cannot be helped. Danger he can face and see is much more easier to handle. Something he's use to facing off with experience behind his greatsword or grimoire. Nightmares are entirely different in that aspect. Lips stayed tug downwards even as his moon does his best to massage the pain and it does leave him.
However, it's meeting those golden hues that he mostly wants to avoid. He does not. He faces them forward, emotions swimming in his own colors of blue and green. The next movements are careful as though approaching a skittish animal, feeling their foreheads meet and he watches as those dark lashes hide bright gold. Ears press back in turn, gaze softening before his own eyes slip to a close. ]
Mm. [ It's a softer hum of acknowledgement. Choosing not to argue or fight him with a "I know." V'seji is being very patient with him, so he returns it in turn. He emits a breath, feeling the tension bleed from his tightly wound shoulders. He nods slightly, one hand gripping onto the small of the other's back with his other lingering at his waist so he can press a chaste kiss to those lips.
He cares not for the attention around them. At the moment, only V'seji's voice is what reassures the turmoil deep in his soul. ] Hopefully.
[ R'yoji tries not to sound too pessimistic but he tries to think on it no further. He sighs out, knocking their heads together once more for that sense of familiarity until he stands much straighter with a goal in mind. Dealing with these haunting nightmares once and for all. ]
[ V’seji watched R’yoji compose himself with vigilance, wanting to make sure his partner is ready for what’s to come. When it seems like he has recovered, his ears flicker up especially to the kiss. The bump of their heads gain a flinch and an overdramatic groan, but he chases those lips while keeping R’yoji in place by grabbing both shoulders. Pixies giggle and coo, saying the two are so precious despite early impressions. A chuckle escapes at that—has he ever been called precious before?
Either way, he’s glad... If his partner voiced that this is too much for him. V’seji would have called it off—maybe he would contact their friends to handle it instead. It’s fine to rely on others once in a while, a lesson they all had to learn through their journey. Some fears can’t be faced alone.
With a heavy pat on one shoulder, he pulls back and smiles at him. Peaceful nights aren’t too far off... And that’s what V’seji wants for him. ]
That’s my boy. [ Even though he never saw R’yoji as his brother or son, let alone the other Miqo’te is older then him... ] Blasting the nightmare to the seven hells will be a breeze for us.
[ His eyelids fall halfway as his smile curls in mischief and confidence. The nightmares they’ve dealt with before were no match to them. How different can this time be? Reluctantly, he pulls away from him so he can follow after the Porxie that guides them to the nightmare manifested. ]
[ R'yoji barely has the moment needed to roll his eyes at his lover's overdramatic flare. A surprised sound escaping him at the hold that keeps him in place, feeling the roundness and softness of those lips keeping to his. The Miqo'te almost loses himself to the affection.
Almost. Sound of their audience cutting through and once they part, he shoots them an annoyed look. V'seji seems all the more amused by it so his own share of annoyance is lighthearted. For now, he focuses back on the man before him, lingering close as he feels the need and urge to curl close to him. To rub their noses together, their ears, to nuzzle and give off a loud rumbling purr to show his sheer affection for his other half.
And it's that heavy pat thay grounds him in place and stops him from doing any of that. Preparing for what's to come. What has come. There's another light roll of bi-colored eyes at the term but he'll live. ] I pray it's that easy.
[ Certainly the lesser beings were easy to laugh at. Their strength certainly overpowering on children, but adults like themselves dealt with easily. He can barely imagine what kind of nightmare manifested from him.
R'yoji follows after with ears pinned back and a low lashing tail. Though more or less ready, he's still nervous. Trying to take easy breaths with hands at the ready to draw his weapon when needed.
He remembers the large fiery lion they faced off with before. This... this was anything but. Everything about it was demonic, draconic- almost humanlike. There's confusion from R'yoji when he sees it. This is.. not what he remembers? Or imagines his nightmare to be. However, the sensation of it, recalls his plaguing nightmares and instead of fear he draws upon anger.. frustration towards it. ]
[ Squinting, he's not sure if he's seeing the figure in front of them correctly. Shooting a look at the porxie, it reassures them that this is correct. This is the embodiment of Yoji's nightmares. His tail lays low as his ears pin back, finding it had to face this even if it isn't his own. ]
You seem to remember Nidhogg very differently from I, Yoji.
[ V'seji isn't one to forget the similar atmosphere... Everything within the vicinity feels cold, as if they were back in Ishgard's never-ending winter. He had always thought this dragon was the source of the nightmares or at least the Dragonsong War was the chapter Yoji couldn't quite close. V'seji was fortunate to move on, but maybe if he didn't have the friends he did he would have been stuck there longer, too.
With a frown, he takes a deep breath as they repeat this familiar story. ]
Then I've picked the right job, haven't I?
[ Wielding his spear, he holds it out before spinning it in his hand, then holding it properly in a battle ready stance. Wisps of blue dragons run across his body, imbuing him with the strength of Dragoons before him... and the dragons they had to unfortunately slay. ]
Well, I cannot say I ever really got a good look at him in my nightmares.
[ Everything is usually so.. distorted. The darkness trying to protect him while also being twisted into another. Despite how calmly he speaks, his body is tightly wound with the tension bleeding in the air. The almost crushing sensation of it as it ghostly wraps itself around his throat. He has to swallow, taking a breath after so his mind knows he can in fact breathe.
Things got better from then on. It's what he likes to think, going into liberating in the war against the Imperials and yet still it plagued him. It takes everything to raise a hand up for the greatsword against his back, swinging over with almost seeming little effort as he moves into his own stance. One foot sliding forward, inching to the side with eyes that stay focused on the reason for his sleepless nights. ]
Aye, that you did. [ He wants to chuckle at it. Nothing better than having a dragon slaying job on your party against one of the most evil dragons to roam this world. He takes a step carefully, urging his legs to move than be stuck in fear and be the unfortunate reason for his sudden demise. A snarl echoes deep in the creature's chest, a mixture of draconic and demon talking to them. Taunting.
Thankfully, this is not the dream world so he cannot fully grasp and understand it. ] Let's end this sooner rather than later.
[ With that, he starts. He immediately plunges forward with a wide swing of his blade, colliding right against the nightmare that fluidly raises a lance made of claws and wings to stop it in place. That's fine, so long as it keeps its attention on him, turning to allow V'seji the room and opportunity to get an upperhand in combat. Darkness collides into the figure, not seeming to do much as the weight of his sword soon begins to tremble under the weight.
I'm afraid. Don't be. I don't want to die. You won't. Fangs grit, a pained expression flickeirng over his features as he tries to push the weight back. ]
[ He's of the same mind, albeit with a rather arrogant expression. Smile rather bright for the occasion and gaze leveled, he tries to think of this as a chore. The less he sees of Nidhogg, the better. Once R'yoji plunges into the shadowy figure, V'seji follows right after with a pierce of his lance, then casting a red link between his companion and himself. The translucent yet gleaming red scales connect them, then a glow lights from the tip of his spear when it lifts to the sky. A ring of light expands and emboldens them with strength.
There's no pause in his movements. The assaults come with each slice or pierce and, when he finds the opportunity, jumps. Fortunately, V'seji doesn't fear Nidhogg like he once did. The stupid dragon is but a past for him, a dreadful memory that he finds a little fun to beat up. As long as the figure doesn't turn to him and only keeps its animosity on his partner, things will go well! He only needs one more mirage dive as he's rounding back his rear to disembowel the shadow, however that works.
It seems like their dear Nidhogg is finding him to be a pest, seeing that it swings its wretches lance backward. Fortunately, V'seji barely dodges it with a flip back, but... This isn't good, is it? Hesitantly, he circles around, waiting for another opportunity. ]
[ As soon as the connection is made between them, a hand raises to clench in the air as he begins to slash and slice onto the monstrosity. Feeling the very moment where he seems to grasp onto the darkness dwelling inside him and bring life to it. The shadowy form taking shape and soon plunging into the beast as well. Seeing his shadowy form endlessly attack encourages him to do the same even though the moment he loses even a second of attention that's directed to V'seji does he feel himself waver.
Fear. It shows, gritting his teeth as his partner manages to dodge with grace. Even still, he provokes it and snaps the interest back almost instantly. ] It is nothing I haven't heard before.
[ Nothing important. Taunts. Words. Reflecting his exact thoughts during those dark times. Thoughts he no longer thinks, no longer drowning in that suffocating darkness. Not nearly as much as then. A flood of darkness escapes his greatsword to try and slash down Nidhogg's hide but gains anger. A step back becomes a misstep and suddenly he's forced onto his knee with a sharp grunt while his greatsword bares most of the weight of the dragon's weapon.
A spike of energy explodes on the creature's form that gives him back enough strength to shove it back and yet his form isn't nearly as confident as it was at the start. There's a shadowing on his mind. ] ..Damnit.
[ V'seji sees his chance and pounces on the beast without a second thought. With two eyes, he can call upon the very same power that haunts them, but he keeps a keen eye on his partner instead. It would be imprudent to start an assault. Quickly, he lodges his boot into Nidhogg's wounded side, effectively stunning it for a second. It roars despite its mismatched form. V'seji's lance takes once sweep to knock the stupefied nightmare a couple of feet back, standing in front of R'yoji in a defensive position before peeking over his shoulder.
Something doesn't seem right. ]
You're not alone fighting this nightmare. [ They all witnessed Nidhogg's wrath, even if the Dragonsong War meant something different to each one of them. They all share this dream in some shape or form. ] Never forget that.
[ So whatever darkness R'yoji still has— ]
Speak to it if you need to.
[ Even if the rest of their friends aren't here physically with them, V'seji can feel them in spirit. Slowly, Nidhogg is moving again, taunting them again in dragon speech. Though muffled, V'seji thinks he can almost make out the words. ]
[ Colors of green and blue take in form of his partner before him, catching him glance over and he squeezes his eyes shut in response to those words. He knows. Not only were there more that went through this torment, but right here and right now V'seji was here to help bear the burden. He couldn't forget. The him of now.. he could never truly believe he was alone because he was not. He had him, their other friends.. other family.
His eyes return to the shape as it speaks in its slithery tongue. Pressing back onto his feet, the weight of his sword stabbing into the ground to push himself as red dark energy swirl around his body and encourage him on. The very same darkness touching to the small of his back to usher him on.
He could not leave it like this and turn away. He refused to turn back now, to take their leave. if he didn't face this now.. he does not think he ever will. And so, it was either now or never. The air goes oddly quiet as his sword swings through it and held once again before him and he's plunging immediately over to bear all of his weight into the attack as the dark energy pulses. ]
I am not the same man as I was before. I may not be as strong as everyone else, but I am not weak either. [ He can feel the monster's weapon shake against his weight as he pressures it on with fangs gritting tight. ] Just as then, and now, I won't let this stop me.
[ He feels the shock of its power shove him a couple of feet back but instantly he's plunging back in with a heavy swing of his sword with more determination than before. ] So I don't need to talk to it. Because it already knows.
[ This ends today. His grip tightens on the sword as he slashes and seems to miss the creature, only for the blade to causes a flood of darkness to slice at it in turn. ] I won't lose to you-!
[ It only agitates Nidhogg more but that's fine. Let it get angry. ]
[ V'seji steps back to let his partner take the reins again, watching his back as he lunges toward Nidhogg with risen spirit. A smile crosses his lips as his ears pin back, a little worried, but overall relieved to see R'yoji somewhat confident in this encounter. Twirling his lance in a hand, he holds it in a position, ready to imbue it with the power of dragons and dragoons long gone.
Instead of an azure blue that once slithered around his body, emboldening him in every battle, a crimson red replaces it. The wisps of dragons coil around him, roaring at the figure in front of them. They start covering his lance, charging it up further. ]
This may be the end for you once and for all, nightmare.
[ This dream can't even compare to the real terror of the dragon... The dragon that held onto revenge and hate for so long as a salve to its wounds, but it only festered. It's a mere fabrication of what once was, a ghost that latched onto R'yoji like a parasite.
Concentrating, he merely points his lance at the staggering staggering nightmare and a red astral dragon is called forth. It spirals and rushes over, engulfing R'yoji and consuming Nidhogg—it leaves his partner unscathed, but can't say for the bad dream... It isn't enough to put it down, but it should continue to slow it. In the end, he can't finish what R'yoji should, but he can support him. ]
[ It's that very support that gives him the strength he needs to face it once and for all. Support that, once upon a time, he would have surely turned away from. To continue diving into the shadows alone. To face everything by himself, seeking the end that he could not see among the flood of darkness. A shiver runs down his spine as that red serpentine dragon form traces over him but with naught a scratch upon him. Instead, he sees it strike fang and teeth into Nidhogg's demonic shape that staggers from the weight of attacks and drops onto a knee.
Ears flicker back at sound of those words encouraging him on. Belonging to a voice that pushed at him, that struck at his core as it edged him on during the war. Fought against him while also dragging out answers: Who are you? What is it you fight and for what reason? He was a called hero, a Warrior of Light that was to be the guiding light to the people. In this moment, he finds it more fitting that such a title belongs to his comrade, his best friend and love.
This was the very man that yelled words that truly had him questioning his earlier decisions. Who is here helping him face his nightmares, not to laugh or scoff about but to truly support him in his time of need. To think how much more terrifying that was, to take that help than actually be here now. His earlier tremors of course haven't left his mind. Even now, the greatsword in hand seeming more heavier than usual.
He shakes his head. He does not want his friend's efforts to be for naught, striking upon the nightmare manifested slice after heavy swing. The red darkness normally engulfing his form flaring as he puts all his strength into stabbing right through the chest of the beast that makes a guttural sound. It heaves a few more breaths, clawed hand on the blade as it growls some words that have R'yoji's eyes widening with ears perked straight upright. All his movements freeze, blinking only a moment until the nightmare starts to fade into shadows and soon vanishes entirely.
The blade falls to the ground with a sound, R'yoji heavily leaning onto it as he stares where it once was before he straightens with a light shake. For a moment, he doesn't move, doesn't look at V'seji right away. ]
.. I didn't think I needed this. Mayhaps I was being stubborn. Thinking what I had- [ a swallow, no that's not right ] have is all I need. I wanted to believe that. I had.. this mindset that this was for nothing and maybe I still do want to believe that. [ I need to believe this was for nothing. ]
.. [ Even now, he does not turn, but there's a heaviness to his words as he speaks. Ears fold back, head dipping as he feels the sting in his chest, flared and hot as the day Nidhogg struck at him. A hand presses to his chest, taking a breath he feels held for too long, a wetness to his eyes that he blinks rapidly to chase away. ]
I cannot tell if this is our end, but it is at least our closure. [ The shadowy form beside him drops to its knees with an echoing sound of chains before too leaving his side. Once he's sure he's not looking too miserable does he turn around, a sheepish look on his face. ] We're done now, aye?
[ He's feeling ready to do just about. Anything else, really. ]

no subject
Need you in stay vigilant.
no subject

I'm ready.

He's trying to speak, isn't he?

] ..Damnit.
